A Rate Rise Before Christmas: Should Retailers Re-Forecast Now?
A rate rise is a reason to test the Christmas plan, not to cut every category by the same percentage. Merchmix Core lets planners compare sales, stock and intake assumptions in MFP/WSSI, while Yukti can support a proposed response for review.

THE MERCHMIX DECISION / Core + Yukti
The forecast moved. Did the intake?
Keep the committed receipt visible when expected sales change.
Worked retail example. Independent of the reported company records. Financial scenario amounts are USD.
Christmas apparel / three-week outlook
| Week | Opening | Intake | Sales | Closing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| W1 | 120 | 100 | 120 | 100 |
| W2 | 100 | 100 | 120 | 80 |
| W3 | 80 | 100 | 120 | 60 |
The receipt remains committed when the forecast changes.
The original weekly outlook sells 360 units across three weeks.
THE KEY IDEA
The immediate task is to expose which commitments no longer fit a plausible demand scenario. Core makes the assumptions comparable; the team still owns the forecast and the approved next action.
The policy change, and what it does not predict
On 3 November 2026, the Reserve Bank of Australia raised its cash-rate target by 25 basis points to 4.85%. The RBA described tighter financial conditions and an outlook in which household consumption growth would be weighed down. The new target took effect on 4 November.
That is a macroeconomic signal, not a forecast for an individual retailer’s Christmas sales. Categories, customer groups, price points and existing commitments can respond differently. The planning job is to test the exposure with actual trading evidence.
Do not confuse sales value with demand units
A softer dollar forecast can come from fewer units, a different product mix or a lower average selling price. Those changes have different effects on stock. Identify the assumption before revising the buy.
Core’s Budget Builder and MFP/WSSI provide a place to inspect the sales, unit and financial context. Compare the proposed position with the approved plan and keep the chosen merchandise hierarchy and periods consistent.
Keep the reason for a forecast change attached to its merchandise scope. A gift category that continues to trade strongly should not inherit a reduction designed for a weaker discretionary line. In Core, the useful comparison is the accepted version against a clearly identified alternative, with the receipt weeks and closing target visible in both.
The receipt stays committed when the forecast changes
A retailer opens the review period with 120 units, expects a 300-unit receipt and plans to sell 360 units. That leaves 60 at the end. In a stress scenario, expected sales fall to 300 while the receipt stays unchanged, leaving 120.
Keeping the original 60-unit closing target would require 240 incoming units: 300 sales plus 60 closing less 120 opening. The current 300-unit order is therefore 60 above the scenario requirement. At $35 cost each, those 60 units represent $2,100 of exposure, not a confirmed loss or an available buying allowance.
THE FIGURES BEHIND THE DECISION
| Position | Opening | Intake | Sales | Closing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Approved plan | 120 | 300 | 360 | 60 |
| Stress scenario | 120 | 300 | 300 | 120 |
| Target basis | 120 | 240 | 300 | 60 |
120 opening + 300 incoming − 300 sales = 120 closing
Tie the revised demand to a dated intake plan
Inspect the weeks in which sales soften and the receipt is due. A seasonal total can hide a late delivery after the main demand window or an early delivery that ties up cash before it is needed.
Core supports alternative planning assumptions and version controls. A lower scenario remains a proposal until the correct approval process makes it the working plan. Changing the budget does not confirm a supplier amendment.
Put a quantity behind the next proposed action
The useful question is which permitted action would bring the expected closing position closer to the chosen target. A request to review 60 incoming units is more precise than a general request to reduce inventory.
Yukti’s proposed response should be read with the affected stock, financial basis and approval context. This example shows a decision for a planner, not an automatic instruction to cancel an order or a guaranteed response to the rate rise.
Decide which assumption would change the action
A stress scenario is useful only if it produces a decision rule. Record which trading evidence would justify adopting the lower forecast, which weeks it affects and when the team will review it again. A retailer can prepare an intake discussion without declaring that every category will respond to the policy change in the same way.
The weekly animation spreads the committed receipt over three weeks to expose timing. That is a worked assumption, not a supplier schedule from the news. The total remains 300 in both outlooks. If an amendment cannot be agreed, the team still needs a plan for the higher closing stock; deleting the excess from a forecast would conceal the commitment rather than resolve it.
| Signal | Merchmix workspace | Decision to review |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly demand weakens | Core / MFP/WSSI | Compare observed units with the approved and stress outlooks. |
| Intake exceeds the revised requirement | Core / buying plan | Keep the 60-unit gap visible while reviewing permitted options. |
| A response needs approval | Yukti / proposed action | Specify the quantity and assumption; retain the unchanged commitment until confirmed. |
Set a short evidence-led review cycle
Track the relevant trading weeks and compare observed units, price and mix with the scenario. If sales remain resilient in one area, a blanket reduction may damage availability there while leaving another area overcommitted.
Record the accepted forecast, the unchanged commitments and the owner of any supplier follow-up. Revisit the position when new evidence arrives instead of assuming the first macroeconomic scenario is the final Christmas plan.
BEFORE THE NEXT DECISION
- Planner
Compare observed weekly units with the 360-unit approved outlook and 300-unit stress outlook.
- Buyer
Keep the 300-unit commitment visible while reviewing the 240-unit revised intake requirement.
- Decision owner
Approve the chosen forecast separately from any supplier amendment.
Common questions
Should the rate rise determine a fixed sales reduction?
No. Use it to test scenarios, then use category and trading evidence to choose the working assumption.
Are 60 units available to buy in the example?
No. They are already committed above the intake requirement in the lower-sales scenario.
Does changing the budget cancel the receipt?
No. The supplier commitment remains until a permitted amendment is confirmed.
Are the scenario amounts Australian dollars?
No. All worked-example amounts are USD; the policy rate is a separately sourced Australian fact.
Can the working forecast change before a purchase order changes?
Yes. They are different records. Keep the accepted forecast and the current order visible together until any supplier amendment is confirmed.
